A city in NJ is writing tickets to people caught texting while walking. On the one hand I get it. I mean, it is dangerous-you can hurt yourself and cause damage to whatever car happens to hit you as you step off the sidewalk and it would not be fair to put the burden of your medical bills on that poor soul who you walked out in front of-BUT- I also think this is a bit far reaching. Part of me thinks that if you are dumb enough to be texting and not paying attention you kinda deserve to be hit honestly but I think that this law may be in place not just for the safety of those travelling with their iPhones attatched to them but for the people who are driving. I mean, yeah as a driver you are expected to pay attention and be aware of your surroundings, but who would expect an adult to walk into the middle of a busy road when cars have the right of way? In neighborhoods I watch for young kids following their basketball into the street, but in the middle of town I should not have to watch out for a grown person walking when I have a green light and there is no cross walk.
I am all for less goverment intrusion and limited restrictions on certain things, but I think that this one might be okay.
What worries me more than the fact that this law is in place is the fact that it is needed at all. How stupid have we as a country gotten if there has to be a law put in place to tell us NOT to text while walking? A law that punishes you for not paying attention to where you are going? We are talking about adults here. People who should know-"Hey, I'm walking down a busy sidewalk or crossing busy intersections, I should pay attention or STOP walking and take a minute to reply to this text. Or hey, better yet CALL and TALK to the person instead." Unless of course you are one of those people who can't walk and talk at the same time....but maybe we should look for that regulation next huh? Again, this law is not too big of a deal to me cuz it does help the drivers on the road not be liable for some idiot who walks into the road, but like I said I am saddened by the fact that a law has to put in place so that people will know what is safe and what is not.
