Have you ever gone to a kids ball game and halfway through they scoreboard gets shut off or turned around? This new trend is disturbing for a lot of reasons. First of all, it robs the winning team of that good feeling that comes with victory. Why should they be punished because they are miles ahead of another team? Also, it gives the losing team a sense that their loss means nothing. Sure, we all feel bad for the team that is getting clobbered 12-0 but in life you can't turn off the scoreboard when little Johnny fails a test, gets fired or loses his girlfriend, even if these things have happened many times before. It might take the sting out for a bit, but in the long run they learn nothing.
People have gotten stuck on the ideas of making everyone feel like a winner. In life there are winners but there are losers too. For every winner there is at least one loser, and ususally more than one. We have to teach our kids to deal with loss and to persevere beyond their failures. We also have to teach our kids to win graciously but to be proud of thier successes at the same time.
