Well, I just heard the big news about dessert. Apparantly I have been uninformed prior to The First Lady announcing that dessert is not in fact a right. Wow.
Of course I am being majorly sarcastic. Everyone with a bit of common sense knows that dessert is not a right, it is a treat, a reward, a privilage even. The First Lady has taken it upon herself to parent everyone in the country and to fight obesity. Guess what? We don't need your help. WE don't need some condescending camera hog telling us that dessert, Mcdonalds and soda can make us heavy. WE KNOW! Here is something she might not know though. Having dessert once in a while won't make you fat. Having a soda at school once a week will not make you fat. Having a Happy Meal once in a while will not create an army of over weight children. Guess what will? Having parents who don't bother to encourage their kids to go play sports and actually try to do their best at it. With a plethera of sports to choose from there should be one out there for every (almost) kid. There is baseball, football, soccer, tennis, track and field, softball, volleyball, golf, gymnastics, ice skating , hockey and even more untraditional sports like ultimate frisbee, rugby, lacrosse and bowling. Yes bowling is nota very physical sport, but it at least requires you to get up off the couch and lift something heavier than a TV remote or game controller.
Parents are where the magic happens or doesn't. Parents go grocery shopping. Here is something amazing that people might not know: Parents can tell their children "No". Did you read that right? Yes you did, the work "No" can be used to let your children know that you are not going to purchase that sugary cereal, or that huge box of Twinkies or that case of soda. Or, if you believe like I do that those things have their place (i.e. desserts, treats and rewards) then you can purchase these items and simply regulate when your child gets them. Say, you make Wednesday soda day or Friday is the day you get a Cupcake in your lunch and maybe you make Saturday Luck Charms morning.
My point is that the food and the companies that make them are not evil and Mrs. Obama doesn't need to lecture us on how to care for our kids. Parents need to grow a pair and use the word "No" along with common sense. Let your kids play sports, go for walks with them, be smart about when they get to eat junk food...if you do that your kid will be fine.
Next time I get to rant about what is happening to America's sports. Anybody ever go to a game where they turned the scoreboard off? You know what I am talking about.
